The casework has been restored and refinished in high gloss black polyester for a perfect, as-new finish. This goes far beyond the level of restoration that most instruments see, where the hammers/ shanks/ rollers/ whippens are replaced individually and put in the old action - this is a total replacement of the front action in a single unit. As a result it plays like a brand new instrument, and will give several decades of top quality performance as a minimum. The action is an entirely new Hamburg Steinway unit replacing completely the previous action. The piano was disassembled back to individual parts, and every component on the piano has been replaced or restored Over the last 12 months this piano has been fully restored from scratch back to near-new condition.

The piano can be seen in various archive photographs from the castle and heard on several well known LPs recorded on it.įollowing the sale of Hever Castle in the early 1980s the piano was sent to Hamburg Steinway where it was extensively restored, before being purchased personally by a bishop and used in a cathedral until the last few years. During this time it will undoubtedly have appeared on the majority of London concert stages and be played by many great pianists from history.Īfter retirement from the concert stage, this piano was purchased from Steinway Hall by the billionaire Astor family and remained in their ownership until around 1980, and for many years was in the music room of Hever Castle. This piano was selected to be retained by Steinway and used as part of their concert hire bank throughout the 1920s, an honour reserved only for the very best pianos. This Model D (8’ 10” or 274cm) was made in Hamburg and shipped to Steinway Hall, London on 23rd March 1923.
